Undoubtedly, we've all witnessed numerous news reports detailing various storm activities throughout the state this Spring. In certain areas, several of these storms have tragically led to loss of life and significant damage to properties. As a consequence, four of these storms have prompted local associations to seek aid from the Texas REALTORS® Disaster Relief Fund to provide assistance to affected Texans in the aftermath of these events.
Special thanks goes out to the team heading up our efforts to respond to these events. Arielle Sims and Cara Cate on our Legal Affairs team are accepting, reviewing and processing recommendations for Travis Kessler and the volunteer Leadership Team to make final determinations on awards to applicants. The software being used to facilitate this process was developed in-house and is being supported primarily by Joshua Hobson and Landon Hobson. Ultimately, our Accounting team will receive approvals and cut checks that are sent directly to those in need.
Managing four simultaneous events is significantly demanding, requiring a substantial amount of time and resources from the team. We deeply appreciate their dedicated efforts, as their hard work directly translates into providing assistance to Texans who are in dire need following the upheaval caused by Mother Nature. A look at some of the links below will quickly illustrate the devastating impact of the events.
As of July 1, the Relief Fund will be actively taking applications related to the following four events:
Laguna Heights, near South Padre Island and Port Isabel. Request from the South Padre Island Board of REALTORS® following damage caused by an EF1 tornado. (The Relief Fund is already open and processing applications for this event.)
Amarillo. Recent flooding. The Amarillo Association of REALTORS® requested assistance following heavy rains in early June produced flooding that resulted in the evacuation of more that 200 residents.
Perryton, northeast of Amarillo. An EF3 tornado that resulted in severe property damage, one death and more than 100 injuries prompted the Amarillo Association of REALTORS® to request assistance from the Relief Fund.
Matador, northeast of Lubbock. Another EF3 tornado ripped through Matador, killing four people and injuring 15 and causing severe property damage where it is estimated that a full third of the town of 1,000 has been destroyed. The Lubbock Association of REALTORS® requested assistance from the Relief Fund and is coordinating relief efforts.
A disaster proclamation from the governor and an application from a local association are required for consideration of opening either of the Texas REALTORS® Disaster Relief Funds (public and REALTOR®-only.)
