Did you know... According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. This led to labor activists, municipalities and eventually states formally recognizing the day of celebration to acknowledge the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. More than 30 states had passed legislation to recognize Labor Day by the time Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday on June 28, 1894.
